What is Transformer and Important Parts of Transformer?

An electrical device which is used to transfer electrical energy from one alternating current circuit to another alternating current circuit by stepping-up or stepping-down the voltage level. Alternating current voltage level can be changed by using transformers, on base of changing voltage level transformers can be classified as Step-up or Step down types depending on weather they increase the voltage or decrease the voltage levels. A transformer consist of multiple components, each component has its own value in the overall performance of the transformer. The main components of a transformer are the core, windings, tape changer, transformer oil, insulating materials, cooling tubes, breather, conservator tank, buchholz relays, and explosion vent.  Lets discuss the operation of all these transformer parts.

Parts of Transformer: Nearly every transformer have following main parts

1. Core

2. Windings

3. Insulating Material

4. Main Tank

5. Terminal and Bushing

6. Transformer Oil

7. Oil Conservator

8. Cooling Tubes

9. Radiators and Fans

10. Breather

11. Buchholz Relay

12. Explosion Vent

13. Tape Changer

14. Temperature Gauge
